What is elder abuse?
Elder abuse takes many forms. It may be an act of physical or sexual violence but it can also be a more subtle act where family member takes money from the account or purse of an older person for their own benefit.
It can also be used if someone who is meant to take care of you doesn’t give you proper food and clothing or personal care. Abuse can be intentional or unintentional.
What action can be taken if you are being abused or if you know someone who is being abused?
Each local health office of the HSE has appointed a specific person known as a Senior Care Worker to deal with reports made concerning elder abuse. All reported cases are treated seriously and in confidence the prime focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of the older person I providing support to stop any unwarranted behaviour.
Some abusive behaviour such as physical and sexual assault, is a crime and this type of behaviour can be reported directly to An Garda Siocana.
