June 14th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is held in June each year, in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognises the significance of elder abuse, a public health and human rights concern. The day serves as a call to action for individuals, organisations and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people. On Thursday June 14th 2012 at 11 a.m., the Health Service Executive, the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, University College Dublin, in collaboration with the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse will host a conference on elder abuse in the Health Sciences Centre, University College Dublin.

Speakers include Mr. Niall Crowley, Independent Equality and Diversity Expert, Ms. Maura McCrudden, Senior Case Worker for the Protection of Older People, Health Service Executive, Dr. Attracta Lafferty, Associate Director, National Centre for the Protection of Older People and Professor Jill Manthorpe, Professor of Social Work, King’s College London who will give the keynote address on ‘Interventions to Support Older People who Experience Abuse’.
